The FIA describes Formula Regional as the second step of its single-seater pathway and highlights its role in preparing young drivers for international competition.

That first season under FIA certification featured five events in New Zealand and twenty drivers. Charlie Wurz became the first champion of this new era, while the series immediately demonstrated its international character with drivers from several countries and seven different race winners during the season.

The following seasons quickly expanded the championship’s record. Roman Biliński won the title in 2024, followed by Arvid Lindblad in 2025. In 2026, the championship evolved under the name Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy, with four events in New Zealand and a calendar concentrated during the Northern Hemisphere winter. This particular position allows many young international drivers to gain valuable track time before the start of their main Northern Hemisphere championships.

This role as a development championship is one of Formula Regional Oceania’s defining characteristics. Its winter calendar offers drivers a rare opportunity to remain in competition during the European off-season, while giving teams and young talents an opportunity to prepare for their international programmes. Toyota Gazoo Racing New Zealand has also highlighted the series’ growing role as a development platform towards higher categories.

The 2027 season represents a major technical milestone with the introduction of the new Gen 2 Formula Regional generation. The new Tatuus T-326 chassis, adapted to the series’ specifications and combined with an evolution of the Toyota 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, replaces the Toyota FT-60 cars that had been used since 2020. The new package produces approximately 280 horsepower and retains features such as the push-to-pass system introduced in 2026.

This new generation is also accompanied by a renewed line-up of teams. For 2027, six organisations were confirmed, including M2 Competition, mtec Motorsport, Kiwi Motorsport, Hitech GP, TJ Speed Motorsport and Rodin Motorsport. The aim is to further strengthen the sporting quality of the championship and its position within the international development ladder.

Review Formula Regional Oceania 2028 therefore belongs to an important period of transformation. Following FIA integration in 2023 and the move to the Gen 2 generation in 2027, the 2028 season represents another step in the history of a championship combining New Zealand racing tradition with international ambition.
