Created in 2012 by the FIA and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, the FIA World Endurance Championship succeeded the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and immediately placed endurance racing at the centre of global manufacturer competition. The first season saw Audi claim the manufacturers’ title with the R18 e-tron quattro, while Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer became the first World Endurance Champions. Their title was accompanied by a second consecutive victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The categories have also evolved, with different generations of prototypes and, more recently, the arrival of the Hypercar and LMGT3 classes.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans naturally occupies a central place in this history. The French endurance classic has been one of the championship’s defining events since 2012 and remains one of its most important sporting challenges. Alongside Le Mans, the FIA WEC has developed an international calendar featuring circuits such as Spa-Francorchamps, Fuji, Sebring, São Paulo, Bahrain and Imola, as well as the Circuit of The Americas.

The recent period has highlighted the renewed strength of the championship. In 2026, the FIA WEC features 14 manufacturers represented across the Hypercar and LMGT3 categories, confirming the renewed appeal of international endurance racing. The LMGT3 class alone features 18 cars representing nine manufacturers.

The 2027 season marks another step forward with the calendar returning to nine rounds for the first time in a decade. The championship retains its established events while welcoming the return of Silverstone after an eight-year absence. Ford and McLaren are also set to strengthen the manufacturer presence in the Hypercar category.
