Created in 2017 following the transformation of the GP2 Series into the FIA Formula 2 Championship, Formula 2 has occupied a central position in the international single-seater development ladder for almost a decade. Designed as one of the final steps before Formula 1, the championship brings together some of the world’s most promising young drivers and competes at many of the major circuits on the international calendar.

The book is designed to preserve a structured record of every race, driver, team and circuit that has contributed to the recent history of FIA Formula 2.

Since the inaugural season, the championship has produced numerous drivers who went on to reach Formula 1. Charles Leclerc, the first FIA Formula 2 champion in 2017 with PREMA Racing, opened this list before joining Sauber and then Ferrari. George Russell followed him as champion in 2018 with ART Grand Prix. Other champions including Nyck de Vries, Mick Schumacher, Oscar Piastri, Felipe Drugovich, Théo Pourchaire and Gabriel Bortoleto have also shaped the 2019–2024 period. The FIA and Formula 1 regularly highlight the role of F2 in developing drivers for the premier category.

The inaugural 2017 season is itself an important part of this history. Charles Leclerc finished ahead of Artem Markelov and Oliver Rowland, while Luca Ghiotto, Nicholas Latifi, Antonio Fuoco, Sergio Sette Câmara and Alexander Albon were among the drivers forming the first generation of FIA Formula 2 competitors. PREMA Racing, DAMS and Russian Time were also among the teams competing for honours during that opening campaign.

Over the years, F2 has become a genuine showcase for future Formula 1 talent. Lando Norris, Alexander Albon, Pierre Gasly, Antonio Giovinazzi, Yuki Tsunoda, Guanyu Zhou, Oscar Piastri, Logan Sargeant and Gabriel Bortoleto are among the many drivers who have passed through the category before or around their move to F1. Their careers illustrate the close relationship between the two championships and give each new F2 season a particular place in the history of international single-seater racing.

The competition itself is built around a demanding sporting format. Race weekends combine practice, qualifying, a Sprint Race and a Feature Race, requiring drivers to manage different race scenarios, strategy, tyres, overtaking and performance across multiple formats. Bringing together eleven seasons makes it possible to follow the sporting evolution of the championship alongside the successive generations of drivers and teams.
