Ugo Ugochukwu won the 2026 title after a closely fought season, finishing ahead of Freddie Slater.

But 2027 represents an especially significant technical step. Toyota Gazoo Racing New Zealand confirmed the introduction of a new-generation Gen 2 Formula Regional car for the 2027 season. The championship therefore retains its role as a competitive training ground for young drivers while moving into a new era of racing machinery.

The 2027 calendar also maintains the series’ characteristic winter format, with four January events at Hampton Downs, Taupo, Teretonga Park and Highlands Motorsport Park, with the latter hosting the traditional New Zealand Grand Prix. This position in the international calendar is one of Formula Regional Oceania’s defining characteristics, allowing drivers to gain valuable racing mileage during the Northern Hemisphere winter before joining their international championships.

This distinctive format helps explain the reputation the championship has developed among young drivers. Formula Regional Oceania regularly attracts international competitors and provides an important stepping stone towards higher categories.
